From May 6-8, 2024, 14 students from Gwangyang Middle School (GMS) participated in a student exchange program with Global Prestasi School (GPS). The GMS students stayed with the families of GPS students to experience life in Indonesian households. In return, students from Global Prestasi Junior High School (GPJHS) will visit Gwangyang Middle School from October 19-26, 2024. This program aims to strengthen friendships, introduce learning styles and cultures of both countries, and instill a global mindset in the students.
Â
Day One: Learning and Welcoming Ceremony
On May 6, GMS students began their classes alongside GPS students. They were divided into several classes and interacted enthusiastically. In music class, they learned to play the angklung, guided by Mr. Alvin, the GPJHS music teacher. For lunch, they enjoyed soto ayam Lamongan, a savory dish from East Java.
The official welcoming ceremony took place in the GPS theater. GMS students were treated to several performances, including a band singing a medley of regional songs, a flash mob by the OSIS Mavendra, and a creative dance by Kea, Eugene, and Rika. This series of events showcased the beauty of Indonesia's cultural diversity.

Days Two and Three: Sport Day and Closing Ceremony
On May 7 and 8, GPJHS held a sport day where GMS students participated in various traditional games and sports such as drawing decorative patterns, gobak sodor, badminton, basketball, and futsal. Some GMS students won competitions and received medals from Mr. Joni during the closing ceremony.
In addition to school activities, GMS students stayed with host families for two nights. They experienced the warmth of Indonesian family life, enjoying local dishes such as es cendol, sate, nasi goreng, and mpek-mpek Palembang. They were also taken to see Jakarta's night beauty, including Bundaran HI, Monas, and Gelora Bung Karno. Each student had unique experiences based on their host families, enriching their overall experience.
At the end of the third day, GMS students were treated to tumpeng nasi kuning, a traditional Indonesian dish symbolizing fertility, blessing, and harmony. The hope is that this philosophy of tumpeng can be applied to the future cooperation between GPS and GMS. The farewell moment was filled with emotional hugs and tears from GMS and GPS students and their host parents. Although this meeting has ended, students will continue to enrich themselves with various knowledge while looking forward to the next student exchange.
This student exchange program not only strengthened the friendship between GMS and GPS students but also provided valuable experiences about life and culture in another country. May this collaboration continue and foster a generation with a global mindset. See you in Korea!
