From November 1-4, 2024, 17 students from SMA Global Prestasi represented Indonesia in the Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) held in Bangkok, Thailand. Organized by the International Global Network (IGN), AYIMUN is one of two prominent Model United Nations events, alongside the Asia World Model United Nations (AWMUN). This four-day, three-night event gathered youth from around the globe to simulate United Nations sessions, honing their skills in leadership, negotiation, and public speaking while expanding their international network.
AYIMUN 2024, held at the Rama Garden Hotel in Bangkok, adopted the theme “Empowering Youth Diplomacy for Global Harmony.” This theme reflects the goal of uniting young minds to address and resolve pressing global issues through collaboration. With over 700 delegates from 28 countries, AYIMUN offered a significant platform for youth to engage in meaningful discussions and simulations of UN sessions, fostering global awareness and understanding.
AYIMUN 2024 featured eight international councils, including UNICEF, UNESCO, UNEP, UNHRC, IMF, WHO, FAO, and INTERPOL. Each council focused on specific global challenges such as child poverty, gender equality, water management, public health, and human trafficking. Students from SMA Global Prestasi School took on roles as diplomats, representing assigned countries to debate these issues and collaborate on drafting resolutions. These committee sessions encouraged students to employ diplomacy and international cooperation to propose solutions to real-world problems.
The program began with an opening ceremony that included a Gala Dinner, the Delegates' Parade of Nations, a keynote speech, and an introduction of AYIMUN’s Secretary-General and Directors. Delegates also attended MUN 101 and a Q&A session led by the Board of Directors to familiarize themselves with MUN rules and procedures, ensuring they were well-prepared for the intense committee sessions that followed.
Each committee session was held over a full day with scheduled breaks, giving delegates ample time to dive deep into discussions. During the city tour, full-accommodation delegates and observers visited iconic landmarks in Bangkok, including Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and Chatuchak Market, offering a glimpse into Thailand’s rich cultural heritage.
The event concluded with a closing ceremony featuring cultural performances, allowing delegates to share and celebrate their diverse backgrounds. In the awarding session, AYIMUN honored delegates who excelled in each committee. Nararya Syabil Muhammad Al Faqih from SMA Global Prestasi earned special recognition for the best position paper, a proud achievement that highlights his commitment and hard work.
Participation in AYIMUN provides lasting benefits for young delegates, including global networking opportunities, enhanced CVs, and preparation for promising international careers. Through this simulation of UN proceedings, students not only develop essential skills in leadership, diplomacy, and public speaking but also gain valuable perspectives on complex global issues.
In addition to AYIMUN, SMA Global Prestasi previously sent three students to the Asia World Model United Nations (AWMUN) held in Seoul, South Korea, from October 10-13, 2024. AWMUN offered similar benefits, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of global challenges and develop a range of skills that will serve them in their future professional lives.
Through participation in events like AYIMUN and AWMUN, SMA Global Prestasi empowers its students to grow as active, informed, and capable contributors to the global community, preparing them for future roles as leaders on the world stage.
