Last week, our 7th graders at Global Prestasi School stepped out of the classroom and into the heart of Indonesian culture on a field trip themed “Immerse Yourself in Cultural Understanding.” Over two days, they traveled to various heritage-rich sites across West Java, each stop bringing them closer to the traditions, history, and values of their own country. This hands-on experience helped them not only learn about Indonesian culture but feel it in every sense.
The first day began at Kampung Kahuripan Cirangkong, a peaceful village that feels like a snapshot of traditional Sundanese life. Here, our students got a taste of local customs by engaging in hands-on activities that gave them a glimpse into a life deeply connected to nature and family values. They rolled up their sleeves to try age-old farming techniques, crafted beautiful handicrafts by hand, and even cooked traditional dishes using simple, natural ingredients. This immersive experience allowed them to feel the warmth and hospitality of the Sundanese community, helping them understand the values that shape this unique culture.
From there, the students moved on to Museum Diorama Purwakarta, where history came to life through vibrant displays and engaging dioramas. From local legends to pivotal events in the region's past, the museum transported them back in time. The interactive exhibits were a hit, as students eagerly absorbed stories of the past, adding yet another layer to their cultural appreciation.
Next, the group headed to Museum Diorama Nusantara, a place that offers a sweeping narrative of Indonesia’s journey as a nation. Through detailed dioramas, students explored significant moments in Indonesian history, from ancient times to the modern era. Each exhibit offered a new story, and by the time they left, the students had gained a broader perspective on the cultural diversity and rich history that make up the Indonesian archipelago.
The final stop of the day was Museum Wayang, home to an impressive collection of Indonesia’s beloved traditional puppets. From intricate wayang kulit to wooden wayang golek and the delicate wayang klitik, each puppet represented a piece of Javanese heritage. Our students were captivated by live wayang performances, which brought legendary stories to life through expressive movements and rich storytelling. Many students walked away with a newfound appreciation for this traditional art form and the timeless tales it has passed down for generations.
The second day was equally packed with adventure, starting at the famous Museum Gedung Sate in Bandung. This iconic landmark holds both architectural and historical significance for West Java, and our students marveled at its unique design and rich backstory. With augmented reality features and interactive displays, the museum created a dynamic learning experience, making history not just something to be read about but something they could see and feel. For many, it was their first time experiencing history through technology, making it an exciting blend of the past and present.
The final destination was a highlight of the entire trip: Saung Angklung Udjo. Known for its dedication to preserving Sundanese arts, this cultural center welcomed our students with the enchanting sounds of angklung music. They watched mesmerizing performances and took part in workshops where they could play the angklung themselves. The lively energy in the air was contagious as students laughed and clapped along to the music, and a sense of unity grew as they experienced the joy of playing music together. Traditional dances and puppet shows rounded off the experience, leaving everyone in awe of the depth and beauty of Sundanese culture.
This field trip was more than just an educational outing; it was a journey of cultural immersion that left a lasting impact on our 7th-grade students. By stepping into the world of traditional village life, exploring historical museums, and embracing the arts, they gained a deep respect for the rich heritage and values of Indonesia. The memories made, lessons learned, and stories shared will undoubtedly stay with them as they continue to grow as young ambassadors of their culture. This unforgettable experience inspired our students to cherish and preserve the traditions that shape their nation, instilling in them a pride for their identity and a curiosity to explore even more.
Through this journey, our students didn’t just learn about Indonesian culture; they became part of it.

Just like its slogan, 'the candied crescendos,' FORTALS 2024: Dulcero has given me so many sweet memories and gifts. As we know, FORTALS is the Festival of Arts of Global Prestasi School, an annual art event organized by Global Prestasi High School, featuring exciting themes and well-known musicians from Indonesia. This year, my fellow committee members and I were thrilled to be entrusted with continuing this 14-year tradition.
