Being Scientist for a Day

30 March 2023

The 2023 Science Camp activity was attended by students from Class VIII at Mandalawangi Conservation and Environment Education, Cibodas. The activity was carried out for 3 days and 2 nights from March 8–10, 2023. The students really experienced the joy of living in harmony with nature. They learned several things, such as how to measure air quality using lichens. Lichens are lichens that can function as bioindicators of air pollution in an area because they are sensitive to pollution. Air quality and pollution can be seen through changes in the diversity of lichens.

On the second day, the students carried out vegetation analysis and exploration of the forest floor to understand the type, composition, and structure of vegetation. Students carry out a sampling technique to understand the richness of plant species, the diameter of plant stems, and the diversity of soil animals in the area. The students also learn to explore and measure water discharge. Water exploration is carried out by searching for and analyzing several types of aquatic biota that aim to preserve and balance the environment. The measurement of water discharge is done by measuring:

  • the width of the river,
  • the depth of the river,
  • and the speed of the ball as it passes through a certain distance and time.

This activity is to determine the availability of water in the Mandalawangi area.

Students are taught to identify medicinal plants in the forest in order to be able to understand basic natural remedies that come from nature.

Students also learn to measure pH (water acidity) by sampling water at 3 different locations, to determine the feasibility of consuming water in the Mandalawangi area.

Not only learning about nature, empathy for nature is also being honed, one of which is by sleeping in tents, feeling the sounds of nature at night, keeping it clean, and also planting trees in an effort to reforest, rejuvenate forests, and save nature.

Hopefully, this activity gives a lot of benefits for the students to take care of and love their environment.
