Digital Parenting: Alpha Generation Parenting Methods

Psychologist Irma Gustiana A., M.Psi., Psi, known as Miss Ayank, shows that parenting is a multidimensional relationship between parents and children and can continue to evolve. It implies that parents should adjust their parenting style according to the children's changing needs and abilities, including physical, cognitive, emotional, and social. Parents must appreciate their children's personalities.

'Who do we care for?' Children born in the 2011–2025 period belong to the Alpha Generation. The Alpha generation is called the digital native, that is, those born in a digital age and interacting with digital devices at an early age. Because of this, the Alpha generation differs from earlier generations in a number of ways, including easy access to information, adaptability to change, and digital social skills. However, on the other hand, there are potential dangers to beware of: internet addiction, cyberbullying, possible health disorders (such as obesity), sleep disturbances, developmental problems, and emotional issues.

Therefore, parents of alpha-generation children need to implement digital parenting. It is an approach to parenting that involves supervision, guidance, and children's understanding of the use of digital technology. Ms. Ayank provides the following points regarding digital parenting:

Application of positive discipline in everyday life (teaching children to understand the consequences of their actions, avoiding punishment that can cause children trauma, developing problem-solving skills, and positive behavior in children).

Communication that is open between parents and their kids (including having many conversations with them, using the opportunity to share knowledge that aligns with family values, and supporting the development of good character in children)

Monitoring, accompanying, and selecting content (what do children see?) How long? What time? Is there anything a child hides from a gadget when his parents are with him?

Parents need to understand and learn about the social media platforms used by their children. By studying these platforms, parents can better understand the digital environment in which their children are active, helping them recognize potential risks and dangers, and providing more effective guidance.

Meanwhile, as role models, parents need to pay attention to their own use of technology. They need to ensure that their usage is balanced and responsible, emphasizing the importance of direct interaction, engagement in family activities, and limited screen time. By setting a good example, parents can inspire their children to adopt healthy habits in using technology.

Digital parenting means having clear rules for what children can and cannot do when they use digital tools or devices. However, the foundation of parenting is the connection and open communication between parents and children.
